Before earning a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Washington, and while working on his Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Doug was a firefighter.

He went on to earn his Bachelor of Laws degree from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario.

Doug articled at the firm now known as Alexander, Holburn, Beaudin + Lang LLP in Vancouver but opted for the quieter country life in Merritt, British Columbia after being called to the bar in 1985.
